ADAMS, NY - At 8:36 p.m., Tuesday, April 27, 2010 the Adams Fire Department was dispatched to a report of heavy black smoke coming from the exhaust fan at the rear of the Café Mira Restaurant at 14 Main Street in Adams, one block from the fire station. The Adams Center Fire Department was also dispatched automatically. Café Mira is at the south end of four three story buildings located on the east side of Main Street, all built in the mid 1800s.
First Assistant Chief Allen Mullin arrived on the scene and confirmed the heavy smoke condition. Chief Brian Berkey also arrived and requested a second alarm adding Mannsville-Manor and Lorraine fire departments to the response. Adams Engine 2 took a position in front of the building and hooked to a hydrant at that location.
The crew from Engine 2, Firefighters Joe Simpson and Zack Cobb, under the direction of Second Assistant Chief Rob Simpson forced the front door, removed two large picture windows in the front of the building and advanced an 1¾ hand lines through the dining room to the kitchen at the rear of the building where they encountered heavy fire.
Adams Truck 1 set up in front and began ventilation of the upper floors while crews from Engine 1, and Rescue 1 backed up the attack crew with an additional line.
Arriving mutual aid units assisted in opening the rear of the building and the roof and laid additional supply lines in preparation for a defensive attack if necessary.
An additional engine company from Belleville and a truck company from the Town of Watertown were special called and staged at the Adams fire station.
The aggressive interior attack proved successful, confining the fire to the room of origin and preventing what could have been a disastrous fire which could have destroyed the entire east side of street.
The Adams Fire Department had a total of twenty-eight members on the scene. The Adams Fire Department Explorer Post was holding a training meeting at the fire station and responded with a total of thirteen explorers who provided support services while the Adams Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary provided refreshments.
The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical as the restaurant had been closed for three days. It is covered by insurance and the owners are already in the process of rebuilding and hope to reopen as soon as possible.
